Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center has been awarded a $200,000 grant by Hyundai Hope On Wheels (HHOW) and Hyundai Motor America to support ongoing testing for COVID-19. Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s is one of 11 children’s hospitals throughout the U.S. to receive these grants totaling $2.2 million.
Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s physicians have implemented crucial testing protocols during this unusual time, with a focus that children with cancer need life-saving treatments even in the setting of a viral pandemic.
“At Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s, we treat many patients who need treatments which may weaken or dysregulate the immune system, such as a stem cell transplant or CAR-T therapy. Before we deliver these treatments, we need to conduct COVID-19 testing. Knowing who carries the virus is crucial in this setting. Our goal is to keep patients, their families, and our staff as safe as possible during this pandemic,” said Chief Medical Officer Lisa Diller. “We are extremely grateful to Hyundai Hope On Wheels and Hyundai Motor America for supporting this critical work.”
José Muñoz, President and CEO, Hyundai Motor North America, added: “The Hyundai COVID-19 drive-thru testing grants are designed to get urgent financial support to institutions on the front-line in the fight against the coronavirus. Children who are diagnosed with cancer are particularly at higher risk. That’s why it was important to us to join forces with several children’s hospitals around the nation to company this threat to the health and well-being of children. We are pleased to expand to 11 institutions nationwide, each with a $200,000 grant.”
