Biography
Dr. Mack received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School 1998. She subsequently completed her residency in Pediatrics and her fellowship in Pediatric Hematology Oncology and Pediatric Palliative Care at Children's Hospital Boston and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In 2005, Dr. Mack received a master's in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. She is an attending physician in the Jimmy Fund Clinic and at Children's Hospital Boston. Her research interests are in parent-physician and patient-physician communication, health care quality, and palliative care.
Research
Pediatric Oncology, Palliative Care, Outcomes Research
As a pediatric oncologist, I have a particular interest in cancer-related communication as a model for all difficult conversations. Much of my work focuses on communication about the cancer diagnosis, cancer treatment decision-making, and the transition to palliative care, where communication can have a major impact on the care that unfolds at the end of life. I have developed clinical expertise in communication through dedicated inpatient and outpatient care of childhood cancer patients, created a body of research that defines specific attributes and outcomes of high quality communication, and trained pediatric hematology/oncology fellows and other physicians to communicate effectively with patients and families.
